Alleged shotta dies in custody

An inmate who was scheduled to return to court today, died shortly after he was rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital after complaining that he was feeling ill early yesterday morning.

Dead is Kevin Sawyers, a 42-year-old labourer of Portsmouth, Portmore, St Catherine, who was remanded in custody when he appeared in the St Catherine Parish court on March 14 to answer to a charge of shooting with intent.

Sawyers, who was also a suspect in a murder case, was held in the parish of Hanover in January.

According to Superintendent Leighton Grey of the St Catherine South police division, Sawyers was using another name when he was apprehended.

“His other name is Richard Francis. He was going by two names as a means to elude the police but his right name is Kevin Sawyers,” Grey explained.

Sawyers had been on the run since he was listed as a wanted person in the shooting case.

SHORTNESS OF BREATH

Grey said the police took swift action after Sawyer’s fellow inmates at the Greater Portmore police station lock up raised an alarm after they witnessed Sawyers suffering.

“About 5:50 a.m., the police were alerted by other cellmates who said that he was having a shortness of breath and wheezing, so the police actually went there and took him out and then rush him to the hospital,” he told THE STAR.

But approximately five minutes after he started to receive treatment, Sawyers died.

“We don’t know the cause of his death as yet, it is the post-mortem that would determine that,” he said.
