John Rollins Primary celebrates math geniuses

The John Rollins Success Primary School in St James is still in celebration mode after several of its students came out on top during the recent staging of the education ministry’s Region Four Mathematics Quiz.

The competition, which was hosted at the Calvary Baptist Church in Montego Bay, was part of efforts by the education ministry’s Region Four to improve students’ mathematics performance in the parishes of St James, Hanover, and Westmoreland and also served to improve students’ critical-thinking skills.

Sixteen schools participated in the contest, with each school submitting teams from grades four, five and six, and facing off in matches held in the style of the famous Schools’ Challenge Quiz.

John Rollins Primary’s grades four and six teams claimed the top spots in their divisions, for which principal and coach Yvonne Miller-Wisdom praised the students.

“Our coaching sessions were good. The students were really eager to win, and when they did the quiz, they were able to work the problems in their minds, mentally,” said Miller-Wisdom.

“I must also commend the class teachers as thanks to them, I was able to take the students to a higher level so that they would be champions.”

Somerton Primary School copped first place for the grade-five division while Irwin Primary School came second in the grade-six division. Mt Salem Primary and Junior High came second in the grade-five division and Dumfries Primary School came second in the grade-four division.

Quiz organiser Romane Hudson said the competition received positive feedback from the participating schools.

“The schools were appreciative of the competition, and I feel that this event is a great way of testing our students’ capability in numeracy, motivating our students to be more involved in educational competitions and not just the arts,” said Hudson.
