Major gun bust triggers probe


 

Rifles, pistols, bullets and several other illegal firearm accessories were prevented from reaching Jamaica’s shores, after they were intercepted by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Outbound Enforcement Team (OET) at the Miami International Airport in Florida on November 13.

According to reports, CBP and OET discovered 119 firearms and 267 assorted rounds of ammunition during a routine screening, when they searched two blue barrels and two cardboard boxes which were listed as comprising of household and food items that were headed to Jamaica that has recorded almost 1,400 murders since the start of 2017.

Among the massive weapons find were four rifles, 115 pistols, one hundred and three 9mm cartridges, fifty .357 cartridges, fifty .45 cartridges, twenty-four .40 cartridges, forty .223 cartridges, one hundred and thirty-nine (139) magazines, several firearm accessories, including handgun back straps, magazine parts, pistol grips and butt stocks.

Following the seizure, a major multi-agency trans-national investigation is now under way involving the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and their United States’ Law Enforcement counterparts.
