Vendors move into Ackee Village

The Ackee Village in Portmore, St Catherine, is officially open to the public after a period of delay, since it was officially launched some four months ago by the stakeholders.

Information reaching our news team is that the unique vending site, located near the Dyke Road, has been operational since Saturday.

Scores of shoppers have visited the area to get a variety of ground provisions and food items, usually available to them by way of the vendors who were normally seen along the roadside at the Mandela Highway entrance to Portmore.

Ackee village is now a full functioning vending park with modern amenities, including a spacious parking lot and a children’s play area.

MINOR WORK

Approximately J$11 million from the Ministry of Local Government was spent on the project, with a further US$80,000 (J$10.1 million) provided through funding by the Caribbean Local Economic Development in conjunction with the Portmore Municipality.

Mayor of Portmore Leon Thomas, when pressed previously about the delay in opening of the vending park, told our new team that some minor work was still being done.

There was also somewhat of a stand-off between some of the vendors who had issues with the development and having to be relocated from the roadside.

However, Thomas told THE STAR that by will or by force the entrance to Portmore from Mandela Highway will be cleaned up to become attractive to residents and visitors.

On Friday, THE STAR spoke with a vendor who was seen pulling down his stall on the roadside.

He said, “We haffi move. Today a we last day here so. Dem say if we nuh move, police a come clear up the place and tear down the stall, so we a go over the village.”

Checks by our news team since then proved that the vendors were adjusting to life at the new location as the few who spoke to THE STAR on the weekend expressed satisfaction.
