Where Are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? How Other Celebs Stayed Hidden in Tough Times
Where do broken hearts go? For many celebrities, up, up and away.
From painful breakups to life-threatening incidents, when hardship hits Hollywood, the best medicine is often time spent out of the limelight.
After Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie went their separate ways in September, the A-list actress reportedly sought refuge beside the couple’s six children and two of her closest pals in a rented Malibu hideaway. Then there’s former lovebirds like Gwenyth Paltrow and Chris Martin, who stood united for the sake of their family (and soaked in some Bahamas sun at the same time).
We’ve looked back at a few more stars who went incognito in hopes of moving on:

When the E! reality star found herself at the epicenter of a terrifying Parisian robbery, Kim flipped the script on her public lifestyle for a much lower profile. And although she’s yet to break her silence on the ordeal (save for brief Twitter activity), an insider recently told E! News she’s “healing” at home.
“Kim is doing better but she still has a long way to recover from the robbery. She has been receiving some professional counseling. Her friends and family have been really supportive. Her sisters and mom have been checking on her every day,” the source told us.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner:
Leave it to Ben and Jen for all but writing the guidebook to an amicable divorce. After announcing the end of their 10-year marriage in June 2015, Affleck and Garner took their two daughters, Violet and Seraphina, and their son, Samuel, to their home in the Bahamas for a “private and special” getaway.
Since then, both actors have stayed true to their new normal, enjoying time abroad in each other’s company and in late September, Ben and Jennifer stepped out for a private dinner without the little ones. Talk about a real modern family.
Need to flee from the paparazzi? Look no further than Reese Witherspoon‘s Ojai, Calif. ranch estate, where the Twilight star recovered from his highly publicized split from co-star Kristen Stewartback in 2012. At the time, Kristen and Robert were red carpet darlings, and the fallout from Stewart’s alleged cheating scandal left her ex with some presumably deep wounds to heal.
Pattinson’s picturesque safe haven, which Witherspoon sold in 2013 for $5.9 million, came with all of the fixings, including three guest cottages, a swimming pool, barn, horse stables, carriage house, organic garden and much more. Not to mention its nine spacious bedrooms and seven baths—K. Stew who?!

Fame isn’t for the faint of heart, so when the “Paper Dolls” crooner picked up and moved to Montana for a fresh start, not a single fellow celeb or fan blamed him. Fresh off a vocal surgery, Mayer rediscovered his privacy during a road trip through the state. Of his decision, he explained to Ellen DeGeneres, “Why not be happy after a while? You get to a certain age where you prepare yourself for happiness; sometimes you never remember to get happy.”
“Moving to Montana saved my life. every month keeps getting better and better,” the 38-year-old also reportedly admitted during an Oxford University speech in 2013.
“He said he was sick of feeling scared of riding his bike in L.A. and feeling like the paparazzi was always following him,” an attendee told E! News. “He loved ‘how quiet and peaceful’ Montana was.”
Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie:
Only seven days after the Younger starlet’s divorce from the former hockey player was finalized in February, the duo flew to Hawaii for some alone time with their then 3-year-old son, Luca. In between hitting the beach and relaxing by the pool, these self-proclaimed “best friends” proved that in the wake of life’s low points, it’s crucial to hold on to each other.
“They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives,” Hilary’s rep told E! News at the time of their 2014 separation. “They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time.”

The talented songstress’ personal life came to a screeching halt when in 2008, her mother, brother and nephew were tragically murdered by her sister’s estranged husband.
After receiving the horrific news, Hudson went into hiding to mourn the loss of her loved ones privately. Two years later, she opened up about the terrifying ordeal during a VH1 Behind the Music special.
“For almost two weeks straight…[I was] inside one room with just family and friends coming in and out… because of course the press was everywhere,” said Hudson. “And it was like, ‘Where’s Jennifer?’ I was pretty much secluded from everything that was going on. I didn’t watch any TV, I didn’t even want to know what was going on because I had more than enough to deal with.”
Relying on her faith for solace, the Oscar winner recalled, “I prayed when I got up in the morning and prayed before I laid down at night. If I didn’t, I’d wake up depressed. The day didn’t go right.”
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin:
With more than a decade of wedded bliss under their belts, when things turned south for the Goop guro and Coldplay frontman in 2014, the Bahamas and their two kids, Apple and Moses, came calling. In order to avoid the media glare, the Paltrow-Martin clan resorted to a $10,500 per week enclave on the Exuma Islands. Not too shabby!
A local resident told E! News at the time, “The island is a place where you go not to be seen. People come to the island to really get away. It is a very private island and there is nothing commercial here. It’s a lot of land without a lot of people living here.”
Gwyneth and Chris sought distraction from their marital troubles by enjoying the waves, indulging in some retail therapy and tasting the local cuisine.
