Worshippers flock Universal Church for healing, prosperity

With its congregation swelling in Jamaica, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) has erected a huge structure along Maxfield Avenue to house its fast-growing flock.

Since arriving in Jamaica, the leaders of this denomination have enticed persons seeking remedies of various ailments or those who want to become prosperous.

And according to one man who has been attending the Hagley Park location of the UCKG since 2011, he has seen numerous miracles.

“Mi see people weh sick sick leave healthy and mi see people weh duppy deh pon dem get healing and better,” he said.

He said that the promise of healing was one of the reasons he started attending the church, but refused to speak about the specific illness that he had.

Another woman claims that she was going through a troubled time in her life because of a great financial burden she had to bear, while working for a minimum wage that she used to support her family.

“Mi a one single mother wid three children and mi affi dweet alone. One a mi friend invite mi fi come a di church and soon after mi start the chain a prayer, mi get a work,” she explained.

Similarly, there have been numerous testimonies on television programmes that are aired locally.

Inside the church, the multitude cramming into the building sat listening to the message being delivered by a speaker before breaking out into a worship session, where they prayed and sang along with praise songs.

With four services daily (7 a.m., 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m.), they encourage persons to come and receive an anointing oil, which they claim offers total protection for the users’ family members.

Now with 27 churches in the country, the church designates specific days for different types of blessings that persons may seek.

For example, Mondays are prosperity services dedicated to persons seeking financial breakthroughs.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are healing services, while on Thursdays there are therapy sessions for couples who want to sustain their relationships.

And since the new cathedral in Half-Way Tree, there have been whispers from numerous people at how quickly it was constructed, while others question what else the massive structure would be used for.
