80 – 90 % of roofs destroyed in the southern section of St Elizabeth in particular Black River

After an aerial and ground assessment of the southern section of St. Elizabeth, particularly the Black River area, it is evident that this region suffered catastrophic damage from Hurricane Melissa.

Preliminary observations indicate that between 80 to 90 percent of roofs have been destroyed, with severe structural damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.

The Black River Hospital, courthouse, parish council, and several historic and heritage buildings have been completely destroyed. The town’s electricity grid has been wiped out, and telecommunications remain unstable.

Despite the devastation, the people of Black River have demonstrated remarkable strength, resilience, and hope. The Government is mobilizing emergency relief and has prioritized clearing roadways to restore access and enable the delivery of essential supplies.

While rebuilding will be a massive task, we see this as an opportunity to reimagine and reconstruct Black River stronger and more resilient.

We will overcome this challenge and rebuild a safer, more sustainable future for the people of St. Elizabeth and Jamaica.
