Badda General, ZJ Liquid readying album and tour | Entertainment
Dancehall deejays Badda General and ZJ Liquid have carved their own niche with ‘phone call’ style collaborations which document topical issues.
Having built a catalogue with tracks including Barrel, State of the Union and Current Events Ja, they are looking to release an album.
“The album is called Dancehall Poetry because our style is not the traditional way an artiste deejays or sings. We mainly talk, so to me it’s more a dub poet vibe but just modernising the style as we weren’t the first to do it but we just find it and it a work,” Badda General told THE WEEKEND STAR. “We have a couple features on the project and Miss Kitty is one such feature. She’s on a song called No Lies. The album is basically what you hear, plus unreleased songs.” The set is expected to have about 12 songs.
“My hope is just for people to hear it, receive it and for it to put a smile on their face because it’s 100 per cent reality brought off in a comical way. There’s no violence or profanity, just a clean wholesome and fun album,” said Badda General. The artistes are currently promoting Cult, an overview of deceased pastor Kevin Smith. A follow-up single, Speculation, is scheduled for release today which will explore the varied reactions to the news of Smith’s death on Monday.
When it comes to choosing what issue will be the focus on their next collaboration, Badda General said it all depends on the moment, how big the story is and if it’s something they can joke about.
“The other day when the little girls went missing in St Thomas, we thought about it but we cannot make fun of those types of situations. We have songs about that still but it’s gonna be addressed on the album,” he said. He credits their success to the fact that they are long-time friends who actually call each other to speak about the happenings in Jamaica. With Badda General being based in the US, he believes the diasporic community can relate to the notion of calling friends and family at home for the latest hot topics.
He and ZJ Liquid are taking their act on the road in a US ‘Barrel Tour’ starting next month. There will be 10 shows across cities including Atlanta, Houston and Boston.
