Popular female selector DJ Naz and her new sidekick DJ Nelly Swagg came out swinging for round one of the Guinness Sounds of Greatness Competition (GSOG), dethroning reigning champions High Grade International.

The 13th staging of GSOG kicked off officially on May 21, with Fire Explosion emerging as winners against Di Unit Sound in clash one. Clash two went live on Friday, June 4 with DJ Naz and DJ Nelly Swagg stepping out strong in the juggling round with dubs from rising sensations Yaksta and 10tik, as well as a slew of hits from Vybz Kartel. The seven-week long virtual event will culminate on July 9.

first time working together

“It was a very overwhelming feeling to win this clash knowing that it was against the defending champions, but I feel very happy. Right now, DJ Nelly ah do her thing, and me a do my thing. It was our first time working together on an actual event and is a joy, because when you sit down and think about it, which female me can find and who you know going come from so far to do this? Not many women do this as a career or job,” DJ Naz said.

DJ Nelly Swagg is based in Negril, Westmoreland, and also works in the hospitality sector full time as a disc jockey for Bourbon Beach Hotel in the parish. The GSOG was her first time participating in a major sound clash in the six years she has pursued a career as a disc jockey.

“My journey started at the Black River High School, where I won my first clash for my school. This was completely different because it was my introduction to a platform of this size and status. It was great that Naz Gurl Power won and was very exciting for me,” DJ Nelly Swagg, 24, told THE STAR.

The DJ, given name Okania Watson, said that being part of the only female team competing for the $1 million cash prize and bragging rights is an honour.

She said “There are very few, maybe only me in my parish as a female selector. This is making way for other females who are interested in taking this up as a serious career.”

The next clash is set to be aired on June 11 and will see Rich Squad battling Road Karma for a spot in the semi-final round.
