Maggotty High School sixth-form student Javain James emerged the winner of SunCity 104.9 FM’s high-school disc jock competition last Saturday.

James, 18, became the first person outside of St Catherine to win the competition since 2016. Maggotty High School is located in St Elizabeth.

“The eight weeks of the competition, for me, was not an easy journey, but with the help of my family and friends, I pushed and won the title for 2021,” James, whose stage name is DJ Jay Jay Badness, told THE STAR.

The aspiring disc jockey said he has his brother to thank for teaching him the basic skills of the trade, which helped him cop the top prize of cash and a Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX console, courtesy of Downsound Records. The youngster, who also walked away with gift baskets and gift certificates, said that he would be invest his winnings in an agricultural business.

“I am planning an investment in a chicken farm, and with the new mixer and four weeks’ internship at the radio station, I will be able to improve my skills,” he said.

“I am going to use everything to the best of my ability to expose more positive music on air.”

GREAT EXPOSURE

Brian ‘DJ Tuckerfresh’ Tucker, an Eltham High School sixth-former who placed second, was happy for the exposure he got as a result of the competition.

“The road I walk towards my goals wasn’t the one someone would have wished for. It was filled with obstacles, which, by reaching the finals, means I was able to overcome,” he said.

“With regard to the prizes that I am walking away with, I was thinking about starting an online business to create a small income stream for myself,” Tucker added.

Venece ‘DJ Venny’ Beckford of Waterford High School, who won the competition last year, encouraged all the competitors to invest in their education and their careers.
