One dead, one on the run; two soldiers injured
HOMESTEAD, St Catherine – A joint police-military team seized a 9mm Taurus pistol with six live rounds during an early-morning operation on Mansfield Avenue on Thursday, which left an unidentified man dead, his alleged crony on the run and two members of the Jamaica Defence Force nursing bullet wounds.
“The illegal firearm was recovered at the crime scene after [a] shoot-out [during a] targeted predawn operation in the Homestead community,” senior communications strategist for the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Dennis Brooks, told the Jamaica Observer.
Acting Senior Superintendent Howard Chambers said the unidentified man was shot dead when the police returned fire. Members of the Independent Commission of Investigations were in the community early Thursday, processing the scene as they are required to do for all police fatal shootings.
Residents of the community had little to say when the Jamaica Observer visited.
“We really don’t know the man that got killed, and it seems like nobody from around here is going to identify the body,” said one woman who opted not to provide her name.
Over the past few months, there have been ongoing gang feuds in the community that have left residents on edge. The St Catherine North Division has reported a total of 31 shootings since the start of the year with three illegal firearms seized.
